If you're in British Columbia, generic semaglutide changed the math in 2026. Here is what public sources say about price and PharmaCare coverage — dated and linked, because both move.
What it costs in BC
When PharmaCare listed the generics, it said they were priced at a 65% discount[1]. A July 2026 BC Ministry of Health summary for clinicians listed approximate wholesale costs per pen of about $85 generic vs $250 Ozempic (as reported by BC Provincial Academic Detailing Service, BC Ministry of Health, July 22, 2026; checked November 2, 2026 — may have changed)[3]. Those are not counter prices: what you pay depends on your pharmacy's price and dispensing fee, so ask for a quote.
We do not have a current retail quote for British Columbia. Use your pharmacy's quote. Cash prices reported for Ontario pharmacies are not BC prices.
How PharmaCare coverage works
PharmaCare covers semaglutide for type 2 diabetes through a prescriber Special Authority request. The criteria on the request form are type 2 diabetes with inadequate blood-sugar control on the maximum tolerated dose of metformin[2].
From June 15, 2026, PharmaCare listed the Apotex and Dr. Reddy's generics and added them to its Low Cost Alternative program with full coverage, available through Special Authority[1]. Under that program, products priced at or below PharmaCare's maximum are fully covered[4] — your own share still depends on your PharmaCare plan.
The weight-loss caveat
BC's 2026 summary for clinicians lists PharmaCare coverage for semaglutide only for type 2 diabetes[3]. For weight management, that usually means paying out of pocket or private insurance.
