People often ask for the single best diet to pair with Mounjaro. No study has named one. Here is what the labels say, what happens to body composition on tirzepatide, and the eating priorities a 2025 nutrition advisory recommends instead.

Mounjaro, Zepbound and what they're for

In the US, Mounjaro is indicated to improve blood-sugar control in adults and children 10 and older with type 2 diabetes, and is not approved for weight management — tirzepatide for weight management is Zepbound[1]. In Canada, Mounjaro's monograph covers type 2 diabetes[4], and Zepbound is authorized for chronic weight management[5].

No single "best" diet

The 2025 joint advisory doesn't name one diet. Its priorities include a careful nutrition assessment before starting, personalised, nutrient-dense, minimally processed eating, and enough protein with strength training[3].

What happens to lean mass on tirzepatide

In a SURMOUNT-1 body-composition substudy, people on tirzepatide lost 21.3% of body weight, 33.9% of fat mass and 10.9% of lean mass over 72 weeks; about 75% of the weight lost was fat and 25% lean[2].

Protein and strength training

The advisory notes proposed protein targets of 1.2–1.6 g/kg/day during weight loss (or 80–120 g/day), and recommends strength training at least three times a week plus at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity[6].

Eating around side effects

Smaller, more frequent meals and avoiding fatty or high-fibre foods in the first days of treatment can help with stomach side effects[6].
